One in eight women
Waco, Texas - October 9, 2009
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Furthermore, a recent study estimated that currently there are 192,370 new cases of breast cancer in the United States. Locally, many Central Texas women hear the words that women all over the world dread hearing…you have breast cancer. For one local woman, Gladys Reyes, life was returning to normal and was even more beautiful as she had passed her 5 year mark of being breast cancer-free. Although Gladys felt relieved, she still had to ask doctors what were the chances of her breast cancer returning? In the same breast? Same spot? All questions that she wanted and needed answered. Gladys breathed a sigh of relief when told that the chances of her getting it in the same breast, same area were highly unlikely since she had been in remission for the past five years.
As her yearly mammogram appointment neared, Gladys felt strong and encouraged that this appointment would have a positive outcome. However, uneasiness soon set in when the doctor suggested doing an ultrasound on the same breast and area where her previous cancer had been. A biopsy later confirmed the cancer had returned and Gladys was floored by the news. "I went in to the get the results thinking it would still be okay, I went alone and then when they told me, I broke down and cried. Soon, every staff member in the room broke down and cried with me. They were there for me, my support system." As time passed Gladys shared the good news that because of early detection the cancer did not spread. She is hopeful, strong and has an amazing sense of faith that her treatment will be successful. "Cancer can do a lot of things to you and your body, but some things it can’t do is take away your love, hope or faith. I want women everywhere to know that early detection is the key to survival, it does save lives."
"At Providence Breast Health Center, our goal is to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths in our community by providing early detection through one of the most powerful diagnostic tools – digital mammography," Breast Health Center Coordinator Jennifer Furrer said. "This new technology allows us to catch breast cancer at an earlier stage allowing more treatment options and better outcomes for those diagnosed."
